Direct Support Professionals
$15.50 /hr plus excellent benefits!
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for the direct care, training, and supervision of adults with developmental disabilities residing in the Alegria homes. The DSP will work closely with residents to assist them in achieving and maintaining their individual health, hygiene, occupational, social, and emotional goals.
Alegria Community Living was formed by a dedicated group of individuals who share the goal of creating a new model of care for people with developmental disabilities moving from Agnews Developmental Center into the community. This model of care will be individualized to go beyond the meeting of basic needs to address all areas related to quality of life.
Principle Responsibilities:
The job duties of the Direct Support Professional include:
Direct care and supervision duties:
- Transport residents to medical, dental, social activities, and other appointments.
- Support and train residents as needed per IPP and ISP objectives using appropriate methodology.
- Assist residents in all personal grooming such as bathing, toileting, dressing, medical, and dental needs.
- Assist with coordination of residents’ health care, e.g. provide information to medical providers, administer and document use of medications.
- Comply with clients’ rights, special incident, and other mandated reporting requirements.
- Provide supervision and training during community and recreational outings.
- Monitor physical and emotional wellness of residents and immediately report changes in status as needed.
- Prepare meals and store food in compliance with all regulations and program outline.
- Understand and follow response procedures for all home emergencies, e.g. medical, natural disaster, fire, and behavioral incidents.
- Assist as needed with maintenance and sanitation of home and surroundings.
Administrative duties:
- Record data and maintain files regarding residents’ health, progress, and special incidents, as outlined in Title 17, Title 22, and the Alegria program design.
- Understand and follow all administrative policies and procedures, e.g. mandated reporting, confidentiality policy, personnel policies, client rights, state and federal regulations.
- Document daily status and changes related to residents’ IPP, health, and behavioral programs.
- Help maintain administrative records, resident files, home inventories, and weekly schedules as needed.
- Advocate on behalf of the resident; uphold respectful and efficient communication with residents and all relevant parties. Understand organizations and support systems relating to resident’s life.
Job Requirements:
- At least 6 months prior experience providing supervision and care to persons with developmental disabilities.
- Excellent communication skills; respectful and positive attitude toward residents, coworkers, contractors, and home visitors.
- Complete training of non-physical methods of crisis intervention within the first 45 days of employment.
- Complete required staff training and minimum of 12 hours continuing education annually.
- Complete orientation and on-the-job training within first week of employment.
- Complete DSP training or test for DSP certification within first 12 months of employment.
- Able to meet Title 22 requirements, including, but not limited to:
- Minimum age 18
- High school diploma or GED certificate
- Health screen and TB clearance
- Fingerprinting and criminal record clearance
- CPR and First Aid training
- California Drivers License
- Clear driving record
- Able to lift 75 lbs. (to transfer individuals).
- Some weekend and overnight shifts will be required.
